If you have noticed the pet food aisle changing lately with more eco-friendly packaging, alternative ingredients, and clearer labelling, you are not imagining it. The British pet food industry is undergoing a massive shift, and the roadmap for its future has just been officially drawn.
The trade association known as UK Pet Food has launched its comprehensive strategy spanning from now until 2029. Developed in collaboration with its manufacturing members, the plan sets out a clear, ambitious vision for the next few years to ensure British pets remain well fed and healthy.
At the heart of the new strategy are three core pillars: nutrition, safety and standards, and sustainability. Here is what the new strategy looks like and what it means for UK pet owners.
Nutrition: Tailored to Shifting Demographics
The way we own pets in the UK is changing. Recent data has highlighted a distinct trend where smaller dog breeds are booming in popularity across British households. Because smaller animals have different metabolic rates and nutritional needs, UK Pet Food is shifting its research to better understand and support small animal nutrition.
The group is also collaborating with the European Pet Food Industry Federation to advance expert nutrition guidelines. This includes developing a brand new, definitive framework for pet fish nutrition to sit alongside their existing gold standard guidelines for cats, dogs, and rabbits.

Safety and Regulation: The Post-Brexit Landscape
Navigating ongoing trade and regulatory alignment with the EU remains a primary focus for the sector. While tighter Sanitary and Phytosanitary measures help ease international trade and ensure product safety, there is growing regulatory complexity closer to home.
The UK and EU are experiencing increasing regulatory divergence when it comes to waste management and packaging rules. This makes importing and exporting a logistical puzzle for manufacturers. UK Pet Food aims to tackle this by actively engaging with the Government early to champion robust, science-based safety frameworks that protect pets without slowing down commercial innovation.
Furthermore, the Advertising Standards Authority has been cracking down on vague marketing text. Moving forward, the industry is placing a massive focus on transparency, ensuring that any environmental or clinical health claims on pet food labels are backed by bulletproof, objective evidence.
Sustainability: A Data-Driven Green Agenda
Last year, the association introduced its Sustainability Ambition 2030 roadmap, which zeroes in on net zero commitments, nature restoration, and circular food systems. Under the new strategy leading up to 2029, the green agenda is becoming strictly data-driven.
Instead of vague environmental promises, UK Pet Food is rolling out tracking systems to give manufacturers concrete ways to measure, monitor, and report their carbon footprint. The ultimate goals leading into the end of the decade include:
- Substantially reducing packaging waste through recyclable mono materials.
- Driving a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions across the agrifood supply chain.
- Increasing the use of responsibly sourced alternative proteins and sustainable ingredients.
Woof and Purr’s Take
As pet owners, it is incredibly reassuring to see the industry proactively tackling these issues. We are especially glad to see the crackdown on greenwashing and misleading health claims. Knowing that the food we buy for our furry family members is bound by strict, data-backed safety and environmental standards means we can fill their bowls with total peace of mind.
